The Hotel Splendid Venice pays tribute to the queens of soul and pop, swing and Sephardic music.
Posted March 5, 2018
The new March and April season organized by Veneto Jazz.
“Live Music Aperitif” is back for the months of March and April at the Hotel Splendid Venice – Starhotels Collezione, with a program of soul, swing and Mediterranean music, organized in collaboration with Veneto Jazz.

Thursday, March 8th and Thursday, March 22nd, in the lounge of one of the most fascinating hotels in Venice, two extraordinary and international voices will take the stage, paying tribute to some of the most important stars of black music, Whitney Houston (1963 – 2012) and the queen of gospel, ‪Mahalia Jackson (1911-1972).

For the event on Thursday, March 8th, Vula Malinga, the American-born British singer, with Ivan Zuccarato (keyboards) and Luca Campaner (guitar), will perform a repertoire of soul and gospel music. Malinga, a member of the London Community Gospel Choir, collaborated with Basement Jaxx on their single “Oh My Gosh”. In 2007, she recorded the hymn “Amazing Grace” for BBC South, written to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade. In 2008, she recorded her first single “Wondering Why in October” for her own label DivaGeek Records. In recent years, she has sung as a chorister and collaborated with Sam Sparrow, Robert Glasper and Lala Hathaway, participated on the album “Tongue N’ Cheek” by Dizzee Rascall, and collaborated with Paul Epworth. The tribute to Whitney Houston embraces her evocative and ample vocality.

On Thursday, March 22nd, the trio led by vocalist Joselin St.Aimee, with Michele Bonivento on piano and Alvise Seggi on double bass, will pay tribute to Mahalia Jackson, in a new project that blends gospel and soul, with legendary pieces as well as original material, far from musical clichés. Joselin St.Aimee, vocalist and gospel singer, was born in England but grew up in the United States, where she encountered since her childhood the tradition of spirituals in American Adventist churches. Joselin lives in Italy, where she performs with the most important African-American musicians in our country, including Cheryl Porter, Sherrita Duran, Crystal White and the Bronzeville American Gospel Group, founded by Harold Bradley, a legendary figure in African-American music in Italy. She collaborates with the Halleluja Gospel Choir, led by Cheryl Porter, considered one of the most important gospel singers in Italy. In 2012, she released her first album, “Love Sacrifice,” an intense, emotional journey with roots in the tradition of spirituals. She collaborates with Nehemiah Brown, a key figure in Italian gospel music.

On Thursday, April 5th, the young, Russian violinist Daria Eibuschitz will perform alongside the talented Stefano Ottogalli on guitar and Daniele Vianello on double bass, in a concert showcasing the sounds of jazz violin, paying homage to the celebrated violinist Stephane Grappelli (1908 – 1997). The “patriarch” of swing, he played with the greatest legends in jazz music, from Duke Ellington to Django Reinhardt to Benny Goodman.
Finally, on Thursday, April 19th, the group Mi Linda Dama will perform “Historias Sefarditas,” exploring the Sephardic musical tradition with emotionally-charged, ancient songs that boast fresh and original arrangements. During the Middle Ages, on the Iberian Peninsula, Sephardic Jews lived side-by-side with Christians and Muslim Arabs. A variety of cultures blend together in their songs, passed down orally from generation to generation, in which Jewish stories mix with Spanish melodies and Andalusian Arabic rhythms, creating a vivid musical composition. On stage are Namritha Nori (voice), Giulio Gavardi (guitar, Turkish saz, Arab oud, soprano saxophone), Niccolò Giuliani (chalice drum, cajón, frame drum) and Enrico di Stefano (alto saxophone and soprano saxophone).
