Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Unveils New Shepherd’s Rock Course
Posted July 10, 2017
Highly Anticipated Pete Dye and Tim Liddy Designed Layout Opens July 12
FARMINGTON, PA (July 10, 2017) – Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, the acclaimed luxury resort in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, opens its dramatic new Pete Dye- and Tim Liddy-designed golf course, Shepherd’s Rock, on July 12.

High atop the Allegheny Mountains, the eagerly anticipated 7,151-yard Shepherd’s Rock presents extraordinary golf in a spectacular setting. The rolling bucolic terrain proved an exceptional canvas for Dye and Liddy to fashion a routing sure to draw raves from both media and guests. Shepherd’s Rock will provide plenty of challenge and fun for players of all abilities, and be a perfect complement to the resort’s lauded Mystic Rock course.

The stout 3,834-yard front nine of Shepherd’s Rock is brawny and wide open with jaw-dropping vistas of the Laurel Highlands and ample landing areas off the tee. The dramatic par-5 ninth, under the gaze of Nemacolin’s Five-Diamond Falling Rock boutique hotel, boasts a green occupying the property’s high ground and a single, magnificent oak tree standing sentinel on the right.

The tree-lined 3,317-yard back nine of Shepherd’s Rock will be a shotmaker’s paradise as precision and accuracy are key to successfully navigating its rippling fairways flanked by the ever-present Dye-created mounds, natural wetlands and cleverly situated greens. Ball positioning will be crucial, especially on the challenging par-4 18th. Destined to be regarded as one of golf’s best finishing holes, the 18th offers a demanding tee shot and picturesque water hazard guarding the green, both hallmarks of a resounding finish.

“Pete Dye and Tim Liddy have created a true golf masterpiece in Shepherd’s Rock, and we’re overjoyed with the results,” says Monte Hansen, Managing Director at Nemacolin. “Few resorts showcase 36 holes of this magnitude, positioning us at the pinnacle of premier golf destinations in the U.S.”

Ideal for playing both Shepherd’s Rock and Mystic Rock while savoring Nemacolin’s world-class amenities, the premium “Double Dose of Dye” getaway features two-nights’ luxury accommodations and a round of golf on each of its extraordinary layouts from July 12 until the end of the golf season. Nemacolin’s Stay & Play Golf Package includes overnight accommodations and a round of golf on Shepherd’s Rock or Mystic Rock over the same timeframe.

Both golf packages include cart fees, forecaddie fees (gratuity extra), and locker room and range access. A two-night minimum may be required and seven-day advance reservations are requested. Other restrictions and fees may apply.

The resort’s Nemacolin Golf Academy offers an array of game improvement programming with Golf Digest “Top 100 Teacher,” PGA Professional Eric Johnson, including: individual lessons, TrackMan® Golf Radar Solution, SAM Putt Lab, V1 Video System, BodiTracks, one-, two- and three-day golf schools, and one of the leading club-fitting centers on the East Coast. A commitment to growing the game also abounds, with numerous junior and family golf options.
Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Reveals Renovated Townhome Units That Pay Homage to George Washington
Posted May 30, 2017
FARMINGTON, PA (May 30, 2017) – Nestled on 2,000 acres in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort features three different hotel properties that are honored by AAA, Condé Nast Traveler and Forbes Travel Guide. In addition, resort guests who prefer an actual home away from home can find their niche here, too … in the form of six luxury vacation houses and 52 stunning townhomes. These accommodations are among the many unexpected elements of the Nemacolin experience.

As part of its ongoing commitment to continually update and improve each of its accommodations, Nemacolin recently renovated all the townhomes, giving them complete facelifts and changing their style and décor to reflect some of the region’s unique history.

There are three “neighborhoods” of townhomes; one remains Maple Townhomes, and the others have been renamed The Washington Townhomes and Washington Quarters as a tribute to George Washington. Long before he became the nation’s first president, Washington explored this area in the summer on 1754 as he traveled along what is now U.S. Route 40 – the same road that passes right in front of Nemacolin – to fight at Fort Necessity. During the opening action of the French and Indian War, this fort was attacked by French troops and a young Colonel Washington surrendered for the first and only time in his military career. Fort Necessity is located just 10 minutes down Route 40 from Nemacolin and today operates as a National Park site that explores the earliest days of Washington’s service to the colonies.

Route 40, better known as the Historic National Road, was constructed in the early 1800s as the first federally funded highway in the United States. This passage westward – from Maryland to Illinois – was used by countless settlers who traveled the same path outlined by Washington and British Major General Edward Braddock nearly six decades earlier. In 2002 the Federal Highway Administration designated the route an All-American Road, and these days it’s a popular road trip for travelers who have a keen interest in the country’s earliest history.

Nemacolin’s townhomes are the ideal location for families, friends and even corporate groups seeking a more secluded and private setting for their adventures in the Laurel Highlands. Each unit includes a full kitchen, living room, two bedrooms, two and half baths, a laundry room, a balcony or deck, and private parking. For those who can’t imagine a getaway without their four-legged family members, some of the townhomes welcome dogs less than 50 pounds. (Dogs greater than 50 pounds can also vacation here, but they’ll stay at Nemacolin Wooflands Pet Resort and Spa.)

The bold décor of these units embraces the colonial heritage of the Laurel Highlands and celebrates the roles of Washington, Braddock and also Chief Nemacolin, the Delaware Indian credited with originally exploring this region and its routes and for whom the resort is named. The profiles of all three men are incorporated into the townhomes’ custom wallpaper, and a silhouette of Washington – with his words scripted within – graces a wall of each unit.

The kitchens feature timber walls and hand-carved tables and chairs sourced from Pennsylvania’s Amish community, while the bedrooms and living spaces are decorated in brilliant tones of red, white and blue. The signature plaid that appears in nearly every room gives each home a feeling of true Americana, and wall décor in the living room includes a giant American flag and a quilt print. All of these elements combine to create an ode to American folk art.

In addition, the kitchen ceiling of the Washington Townhomes incorporates “morning star” symbols that are a part of Native American culture. Native Americans use signs and symbols to tell stories, and different tribes have a geometric portrayal of the morning star – the brightest star in the sky at dawn – to convey important concepts. For some it represents hope and guidance, for others it speaks of courage and purity of spirt, and for still others it symbolizes the resurrection of past heroes – people such as Chief Nemacolin.

Guests at the townhome units have access to all aspects of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, including room service. Shuttles connect townhome guests to more than 70 activities at the resort, including everything from art tours to zip lines, championship golf to spa amenities, plus 15 dining options.

Rates at the townhomes start at $319. For more information, or to make a reservation, please visit www.nemacolin.com or call 866.344.6957.

Nemacolin Woodlands Resort’s Mystic Rock Named No. 1 in Pennsylvania in Golfweek’s ‘Best: State-by-State Courses You Can Play’

FARMINGTON, Pa. (April 26, 2017) - Nemacolin Woodlands Resort – the acclaimed luxury resort in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania – announces its Mystic Rock course received top billing in Golfweek’s “Best: State-by-State Courses You Can Play” for the third consecutive year.

Solidifying its position as the best public course in the Keystone State, Mystic Rock has ranked in the top two on Golfweek’s prestigious annual list since 2008. Designed by World Golf Hall of Fame architect Pete Dye, Mystic Rock was the site of the PGA TOUR’s 84 Lumber Classic.

“We are extremely honored Golfweek continues to tout Mystic Rock year after year,” says Mike Jones, director of golf and recreation. “A recognition of this stature is a significant achievement for our golf staff and spotlights the unforgettable experience offered at Mystic Rock.”

Golfweek’s ranking panel consists of 675 voters from seven countries who rely on 10 criteria to rate a golf course. They include overall land plan; variety and memorability of golf holes; conditioning and ecology; and the “walk in the park test,” which rates the sense of the course and whether it’s worthy of spending four hours on it. The number of courses per state varies based on course supply, population and level of play. The Golfweek rankings include daily-fee layouts and golf courses accessible via resorts.

Mystic Rock sits high atop the Pennsylvania Alleghenies and offers championship golf in a spectacular setting. The layout was recently ranked 40th in Golfweek’s “Best Resort Courses in the U.S.” list and No. 60 in Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.”

On July 12, the 7,151-yard Pete Dye and Tim Liddy-designed Shepherd’s Rock course will join Mystic Rock to give Nemacolin 36 holes of world-class golf. The rolling bucolic terrain proved ideal in fashioning a routing sure to draw raves from both media and guests. It is expected to rival the highest-rated courses in the country, with a picturesque finishing hole sure to provide lasting memories.

In addition to award-winning golf, the Nemacolin Golf Academy offers an array of game improvement programming with Golf Digest “Top 100 Teacher” PGA Professional Eric Johnson. Individual lessons, TrackMan® Golf Radar Solution, SAM Putt Lab, V1 Video System, BodiTracks, one-, two- and three-day golf schools, and one of the leading club-fitting centers on the East Coast are highlights. Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Unveils Package to Commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s Birth
Posted March 1, 2017
FARMINGTON, PA (March 1, 2016) – There’s much to see and do on the 2,000-acre campus of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort – everything from animal safaris to zip lining – but guests are also encouraged to explore their surroundings throughout the mountainous region known as Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands. Among the attractions within a short drive of Nemacolin are three homes designed by America’s most famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Wright’s birth on June 8, 1867, Nemacolin is offering a special overnight package that will be available from June 1 through August 31.

The Frank Lloyd Wright 150th Birthday Package features luxurious overnight accommodations at the resort’s Falling Rock boutique hotel, which is a tribute to Wright’s organic architectural style. The hotel was designed by David Merritt, who studied at Wright’s school at Taliesin and then incorporated the master’s philosophies into his own work. Falling Rock overlooks the 18th green of Nemacolin’s Mystic Rock golf course and will soon also overlook a second Pete Dye-designed golf course, Shepherd’s Rock, which is scheduled to open in July. The hotel features 42 rooms, each of which is served by a butler. In addition to this top level of service, guests enjoy a pillow menu, nightly cookie turndown and exclusive access to an infinity pool.

The package also includes tickets to Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, two famous Pennsylvania homes designed by Wright; breakfast for each guest on each morning of the stay; a $150 resort amenity credit that can be applied to any of more than 70 activities on site; The Wright Perspective souvenir book; and a welcome amenity. The package can be booked now by visiting Nemacolin.com or calling 866-399-6957, and pricing starts at $614.

Fallingwater, one of Wright’s most celebrated creations, was built between 1936 and 1939 for the Kaufmanns, a prominent family from Pittsburgh. What made it instantly famous is the fact that Wright incorporated a 30-foot waterfall into the design, allowing the house to stretch out over this natural element. Wright’s tendency to design structures in harmony with their natural surroundings was his calling card, and Fallingwater has been called “the best all-time work of American architecture.” Today the house is a National Historic Landmark.

Kentuck Knob was one of Wright’s last designs; he took on the project in 1953 at the age of 86, just five years before his death. This house belonged to the Hagan family, contemporaries of the Kaufmanns and admirers of their home at Fallingwater. Whereas the Kaufmanns’ house is at one with a waterfall, Kentuck Knob appears to be part of its mountain surroundings, simultaneously dramatic and serene.

A third Wright creation, Duncan House, was relocated from its original location in Illinois to Polymath Park in the nearby town of Acme, where two homes designed by Wright’s apprentice, Peter Berndtson, now stand near the work of the master. All are open for tours and the complex is less than an hour’s drive from Nemacolin.

Wright designed more than 1,000 structures in his lifetime and saw more than 500 of them to completion, but the high concentration of homes open for public tours in a setting as beautiful as the Laurel Highlands is an uncommon occurrence. There’s no better time than now, when so many Wright buildings are celebrating the sesquicentennial of their creator, to coordinate a visit to this region, and no better place than Nemacolin Woodlands Resort from which to base such an architecturally focused trip.

*Please note that children must be at least 6 years old to tour the Wright homes.

Lautrec Restaurant at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort
Posted February 22, 2017
Earns Forbes Five-Star Rating for Ninth Consecutive Year
FARMINGTON, PA. (Feb. 22, 2017) – Lautrec restaurant at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort has been honored with Five-Star status in the 2017 Forbes Travel Guide listing of star rating winners. This is Lautrec’s ninth consecutive Five-Star rating in the prestigious Forbes guide.

The restaurant’s first Five-Star honor came in 2009. Since that time, Lautrec has solidified itself as one of the world’s top dining establishments. This year’s list includes just 62 Five-Star restaurants worldwide and only three in Pennsylvania.

“What the Lautrec culinary team does on a daily basis is nothing short of spectacular,” said Monte Hansen, Nemacolin’s managing director. “It is a great source of pride throughout the resort that we continually have one of the finest dining operations on the planet.”

Under the guidance of executive chef and Pennsylvania native Kristin Butterworth, Lautrec has redefined European-American cuisine. Butterworth is known for presenting an innovative yet approachable menu.

“It’s about simplicity, finding the best quality food we can find and making it completely recognizable and completely enjoyable,” said Butterworth.

By once again receiving the highest ranking from Forbes, Lautrec is in a select group of only 29 restaurants in the world to hold both the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star award and the coveted AAA Five-Diamond award.
